Method, apparatus and system for reducing download of redundant attachments

A method, apparatus and system for reducing download of redundant attachments to a communication device from a server is provided. An identifier of attachment to a message, for transmission from the server to the communication device, is compared with identifiers of attachments already stored in a memory at the communication device. The communication device is caused to retrieve a copy of the attachment from the memory if a match is found between the identifier and the identifiers of attachments already stored in the memory.

1. A method for implementation in a content distribution system, the method comprising:
maintaining, at one or more of a server and a device, identifiers of attachments stored in a memory of the device; comparing, at one or more of the server and the device, an identifier of an attachment to a message, with the identifiers of the attachments stored in the memory of the device, the message for transmission from a server to the device; when a match is found in the comparing, causing the device to retrieve a copy of the attachment from the memory; and, when no match is found in the comparing, causing the attachment to be transmitted to the device from the server.
