PURPOSE: An electrolyte for a lithium ion battery and a lithium ion battery containing the electrolyte are provided, to improve electrochemical properties and swelling property of a battery. CONSTITUTION: The electrolyte comprises a nonaqueous organic solvent; a lithium salt; and 0.001-5 wt% of at least one linear low molecular weight polymer additive selected from the group consisting of poly(methyl methacrylate), polyacrylate, polyethylene oxide, polyethylene glycol, polyacrylamide (£-CH2CH(CONH2)-|n), poly(allyl amine) (£-CH2CH(CH2NH2)-|n), poly(azelaic anhydride) (£-CO(CH2)7CO2-|n), poly(benzyl methacrylate) (£-CH2C(CH3)(CO2CH2C6H5)-|n), poly(4-bromostyrene), polycaprolactone (£-O(CH2)5CO -|n), polycaprolactone diol, polycarbomethylsilane (£-Si(CH3)HCH2-|n), polystyrene, polypropylene glycol, polysulfone, polytetrafluoroethylene, poly(vinyl acetate), poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(vinyl chloride) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone). Preferably the linear low molecular weight polymer additive has a molecular weight of 1,000-100,000; and the nonaqueous organic solvent is at least one selected from the group consisting of carbonates, esters, ethers and ketones. |
