It is proposed to use a novel protective cap for threads, which protective cap can be screwed and consists of a steel core having an elastic layer which carries the thread, the steel core having a longitudinal slot. According to the invention, this allows the attachment of a spreading or pressing device in order to expand damaged protective caps, which can no longer be unscrewed, by spreading or pressing such that the threads disengage and the protective caps can be stripped off. <IMAGE>
