The invention results in substantial improvement of the current state of rearviewing in motor vehicles. The conventional fixed adjustment of rearview mirrors is to be replaced by a variable mirror fixing system. As a result of this, the mirror is automatically pivoted in accordance with the steering lock. Consequently, the rearview, eg. of bends which have been negotiated, is better adapted to the section of road situated behind the vehicle. Example for countries with right-hand-drive traffic: it is primarily the right outside mirror which, by its pivotability, permits or improves recognition of a vehicle travelling on the right-hand side of the road behind the vehicle travelling on the left. This makes traffic safer on multi-lane bends in cities. Pivoting of the mirror may be designed to be either rapid or delayed, depending on the travelling speed, and the speed of the pivoting movement itself may be optimised according to the wishes of the driver. The installation of a motor-driven adjusting element in the mirror casing and sensing of an electrical signal analogous to the steering lock are necessary for implementation of the invention.
