A new leuco dye is capable of developing into a colored dye which has an absorption band in the near infrared region. The new leuco dye has the following formula (I): <IMAGE> (I) wherein each of R1, R2 and R3 independently is hydrogen, an alkyl group, an aralkyl group, a cycloalkyl group or an aryl group; each of X1 and X2 independently is oxygen, sulfur or -NR4- (R4 has the same meaning as for R1, R2 and R3); each of the rings A to E independently is benzene ring or naphthalene ring and may have one or more substituent groups; and each of R1 to R4 may have one or more substituent groups. A recording material containing the leuco dye is also disclosed.
