In a backrest for a seat of a motor vehicle, consisting of a plurality of inflatable air chambers which are arranged one on top of the other, are covered by a layer of upholstery and to which solenoid valves are assigned, the said solenoid valves supplying each air chamber with a predetermined pressure in accordance with at least one stored pressure profile, in order to bring about a rapid and direct change from one contour to another it is proposed to store the pressure profile as at least one predetermined function and to transmit it to the respectively assigned air chamber by reducing or increasing the pressure in a monitored fashion. A pressure sensor is proposed by means of which the maximum pressure can be preselected and by means of a further sensor the maximum pressure value which is determined by the pressure sensor can be applied with the effect of changing the level of at least one of the air chambers.
