The input signal (V1) to the recording system (1) is fed to a formatting circuit (10) which is controlled by a microprocessor (11), control panel (12) and a clock signal (103) from an oscillator (6). The formatted signal is fed via a 'CIRC' encoder (13) and 'EFM' modulator (14) to the head drive circuit (15). The head (5) is driven along a radial spindle (19) and its position is monitored and compared (7) with an output from the oscillator (6).
