The line picture scanner has a picture scanning surface (1) and a sensing line (2) which can be moved parallel to the horizontal in the sensing plane. For calibrating the picture scanner geometrically reference marks (5,5a) are provided on a transparent carrier (3) at the two side edges of the surface perpendicular to the sensing line in the direction of its movement (4), forming images on the scanning line during the scanning process. The sensing line has a mechanical drive and there is a photometric chamber (6) with central projection (7) for producing images of the reference marks. This chamber contains illumination centres (8) for each of the marks, each covered by a slit diaphragm (9) so that the beams (10) are confined to the regions of the marks.
