PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain size reduction in an encoder, and reduce dispersion of the detecting pulse edge by juxtaposing detecting element groups composed of detecting elements having a width narrower than a single slit width of a random number code in two rows by having a prescribed phase difference. SOLUTION: A width of individual detecting elements 1A to NA and 1B to NB is made smaller than a single slit width of a random number code, and a first detecting element group 1 and a second detecting element group 2 are juxtaposed in two rows by having a prescribed phase difference, and an encoder is constituted. By being constituted in this way, since the whole area of the detecting element groups 1 and 2 can be reduced, size reduction in the encoder can be attained. For example, the area of a silicon substrate of a photodiode, a phototransistor or the like to be used in the detecting element groups 1 and 2 can also be reduced, and cost can be reduced. When a detecting signal is converted into a pluse, dispersion of the pulse edge by dispersion of sensitivity of the individual detecting elements 1A to NA and 1B to NB can be reduced. |
