A three phase switched reluctance machine (10) including a rotor (40) having both wide poles (54) and narrow poles (44), with a narrow pole (44) on each side of a wide rotor pole (54). The rotor poles being dimensioned such that the narrow pole (44) face is approximately equal to the stator pole (24) face and the wide pole (54) face is approximately equal to stator pole (24) face and the gap (28) between the stator poles.
