Isoindoloindolone derivatives (I), their optical isomers and salts with acids and bases, other than 1,3-dimethoxy-6H-isoindolo(2,1-a)indol-6-one, are new. Isoindoloindolone derivatives (I), their optical isomers and salts with acids and bases, other than 1,3-dimethoxy-6H-isoindolo(2,1-a)indol-6-one are new; R1 - R6 and R8 = H, 1-6C alkyl, arylalkyl, OH, 1-6C alkoxy, arylalkoxy, 1-6C acyloxy, arylcarbonyloxy, carboxyalkyl, or carboxy; R7 = H, OH, 1-6C alkoxy or acyloxy, arylalkoxy, or arylcarbonyloxy, or two groups R1 - R8 may together form 1 or 2C alkylenedioxy With the proviso that one at least of groups R1 - R8 is OH, alkoxy, acyloxy, or arylcarbonyloxy. An Independent claim is also included for the preparation of (I).
