摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively perform combustion by compressed self-ignition in subsequent cylinders in a wide operating range while suppressing the occurrence of knocking. SOLUTION: In the partial load range of an engine, circulation states of intake air and exhaust gas are controlled so that burned gas discharged from preceding cylinders 2A and 2D on an exhaust stroke side can be led to subsequent cylinders 2B and 2C on an intake stroke side through an inter-cylinder gas passage 22 between a pair of cylinders in which the exhaust stroke is overlapped with the intake stroke. In an operating range where the engine is operated in a special operation mode, injection timing for fuel to the preceding cylinders 2A and 2D is set to the latter half of the compression stroke, and stratified lean combustion is performed in the stratified state of injection fuel in the preceding cylinders 2A and 2D. In the operating range where the engine is operated in the special operation mode, the injection end period of fuel to the subsequent cylinders 2B and 2C is set to the latter half of the compression stroke, and when a load on the engine is increased, the amount of injection of fuel is increased to at least the subsequent cylinders 2B and 2C.
