PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a die steel for cold working which possesses an excellent inhibiting property for a dimensional change and high hardness properties without aggravating other necessary characteristics such as machinability and abrasion resistance. SOLUTION: The die steel for cold working includes, by mass%, 0.7 to 1.6% C, 0.5-3.0% Si, 0.1-3.0% Mn, less than 0.05% (including 0%) P, 0.01-0.12% S, 7.0-13.0% Cr, one or two of Mo and W so that (Mo+W/2) can be 0.5 to 1.7%, less than 0.7% (including 0%) V, 0.3-1.5% Ni, 0.1-1.0% Cu and 0.1-0.7% Al; and has a segregation index K of -23 or more, which is defined by the following expression, by kg/m<SP>3</SP>: K=6.1224 (C) -22.605 (Si) -2.0711 (Mn) +2.119 (Ni) -130.316 (S) -2.2264 (Cr) +16.674 (Mo) +33.257 (W) -11.06 (Al) +5.799 (V).
