The machine tool, e.g. a grinder, has a mechanism to measure the cross section of rotational symmetrical areas of the workpiece. At least two laying surfaces (14,15) are formed for contact with the workpiece areas (21,22) at each measurement flank (26,27), with a step to expand the measurement limits downwards and/or upwards.
