Lead steel is automatically produced by adding to the liquid steel a Pb alloy or cpd. together with a Lanthanide element intimately combined with the Pb as alloy or sinter. Suitable rare earth product for addn. comprises a mischmetal obtd. by electrolysis of the corresp. chlorides and contg. 2-30% rare earths and 98-70% Pb. The alloy or sinter may be added to the steel in the casting channel or ingot mould and the presence of rare earths improved the distribution of Pb in the steel.
