An internal combustion engine (10) exhaust (14) gas temperature increase procedure adjusts (24) the firing angle and uses multiple injection so that a first injection in the aspiration phase gives a uniform fuel distribution and the last injection is in the cylinder (12) compression phase to give a stratified fuel concentration around the spark plug and finishes at an injection angle equal to the uniform charge injection start angle and depending on the piston head temperature (22) or correlated parameter such as time or number of cycles since starting.
