2-Alkyl-2-(N-tert.-butyl-N-diethoxyphosphoryl-2,2-dimethyl-propyl)-aminoxy)-propionic acids and their derivatives (I) are new. Alkoxyamines of formula (I) are new R = 1-3C alkyl; R1 = H or -OCOR3; R3 = 1-20C alkyl; R2 = H, 1-8C alkyl, phenyl, an alkali metal such as Li, Na or K, NH4, NBu4 or NHBu3 (not including compounds in which R1 is H and R2 is 1-6C alkyl); Bu = butyl. Independent claims are also included for (1) the use of (I) as initiators for the (co)polymerization of radically-polymerizable monomers in bulk, solution, emulsion, suspension or mini-emulsion, where compounds (I) show a kinetic dissociation constant kd of more than 0.05 (preferably more than 0.1) s-1 at 120 degreesC; (2) (co)polymers obtained by (co)polymerization as above with (I) as initiators.
