PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for applying a color halftone by using block quantization.

SOLUTION: The method in one embodiment of this invention comprises steps for: dividing an input image into a plurality of blocks; clustering pixels in each of the plurality of blocks into a plurality of color groups; and generating an output halftone image having different blocks associated with each of the plurality of blocks by using representative color values for the groups of the different blocks approximated in spatial areas covered with the different blocks.
