A sliding carriage 4 is mounted on guide rails 2, 3 by means of rectilinear-motion bearings 5, 6 each having recirculating balls 7. Each bearing is provided with an upper track 10 and with a lower track 11 and each track has a profile which conforms to the curvature of the balls. Imaginary connecting lines 14, 15 pass through the centre lines 16, 17 and 18, 19 of the respective balls and ball tracks as shown in Fig. 1, the lines 14, 15 each making an angle of 35 to 50 degrees with a vertical axis of the carriage assembly. Rails 13 are mounted on the carriage 4 to prevent escape of the balls. In a modification as shown in Fig. 4 each guide rail 2a and each carriage 4a is provided with a pair of tracks 11a, 11b and 10a, 10b, respectively, each pair of which forms a substantially 'V'- shaped groove 21 or 20. |
