In order to avoid all of the wet sludge already situated in the wet sludge aeration vessel (13), which has been preheated as a result of the biological conversion process proceeding there, from being cooled below the pasteurization temperature by cold wet sludge freshly introduced into an aeration vessel (13), the wet sludge aeration vessel (13) is provided in its interior with two perforated bases (31, 32) subdividing it into three sequential aeration chambers (13a, 13b, 13c). Feeding means (36, 37, 38) serve to feed pure oxygen into these aeration chambers (13a, 13b, 13c). To each of the aeration chambers is assigned a wet sludge circulation apparatus (33) in order to impart angular momentum about the longitudinal axis of the aeration vessel to the wet sludge situated in the individual aeration chambers (13a, 13b, 13c). It is achieved as a result that the residence time of the otherwise rapidly rising oxygen introduced into the wet sludge is prolonged and that the settling of solids is prevented. <IMAGE>
