1294962 Esterification of polyvinyl alcohol EASTMAN KODAK CO 26 March 1970 [1 April 1969] 14864/70 Heading C3P [Also in Division C2] Esters of polyvinyl alcohols which may contain up to 25 mole per cent of acetate groups, are prepared by esterifying 10-50% of hydroxyl groups of the polyvinyl alcohol, i.e. 10-50% of the total number of hydroxyl groups that the polyvinyl alcohol can theoretically contain, firstly with an aroyl chloride which swells a suspension of P.V.A. in pyridine, and secondly with an acid chloride which does not swell such a suspension, and which has a melting point greater than 130‹C. Any residual hydroxyl groups after the above two steps, may be esterified with an aroyl chloride as defined above, which may be the same as or different from the one first used. The aroyl chloride is preferably selected from those of general formula where R is H, or a C 1-8 alkyl or alkoxy group such as benzoyl chloride, p-anisoyl chloride, ptoluyl chloride, or p-amyloxybenzoyl chloride and many others which are listed. The acid chloride of M.Pt. greater than 130‹ C. preferably is ethylenically unsaturated, such as a cinnamoyl chloride, an ethylenically unsaturated benzoyl chloride derivative, an acryloyl chloride or cyclohexadiene carbonyl chloride or an indene carbonyl chloride, many examples of these being listed. The latter give rise to light-sensitive polymers. In the examples various polyvinyl alcohols, some partially acetylated, are first esterified with benzoyl chloride and then with (1) 4 - (2 - cyano - 2 - carbethoxyvinyl) cinnamoyl chloride, (2) 4-[2-(4-amyloxybenzoyl)- vinyl] cinnamoyl chloride, and more benzoyl chloride (3) 4-(2-benzoylvinyl) cinnamoyl chloride, (7) as in (3) with a further addition of benzoyl chloride, (8) as in (2) but using 4-(2- benzoylvinyl) benzoyl chloride, (9) as in (2) but using 2 - (5 - styryl furan-2-yl) acryloyl chloride, (10) methyl 1 - [4 - (2 - chlorocarbonylvinyl)- benzylidene] indene - 3 - carboxylate, and benzoyl chloride, (11) 1,2-diphenyl-cyclo-propene-3- carboxylic acid chloride, and benzoyl chloride and (12) 1-methoxycarbonyl-4-chloroformyl-1,3- cyclohexadiene, and in others P.V.A. is first esterified with p-anisoyl chloride and then (4) 4-(2-benzoylvinyl) cinnamoyl chloride and more p-anisoyl chloride, (5) as in (4) but using pamyloxybenzoyl chloride instead of anisoyl, and (6) as in (4) replacing p-anisoyl chloride with ptoluyl benzoyl chloride. |
