The laser includes a rod or plate-shaped laser body (4) with a longitudinal axis of a laser active medium, a resonator (13.1,13.2) parallel to the longitudinal axis, and a pump light source (1) for stimulating the laser active medium. Temp. adjustment devices (15) are provided at the peripheral surface of the laser body to set a predefined temp. perpendicular to the longitudinal axis direction with the laser operating. The temp. setting arrangement ensures that with the laser operating a thermally induced intrinsic refractive index field with defined lens geometry is formed. The refractive index field has a concave toroidal or cylindrical lens with energy fed in rotation symmetrically wrt. the longitudinal axis.
