A mass (1) is provided in contact with a tensioned spring (2). Releasing the spring (b) allows the mass to translate left so that its cam surface (5) deflects a tool (6). On completion of its travel (d), the mass is brought to rest, then returned by a second spring (4). The mass returns (f) almost to the start position, some energy having been lost in deflecting the tool (6). The spring (2) is re-tensioned (g) ready for the next stroke. In a practical tool, with either linear or rotational movement, the lost energy is replaced by an electric motor.
