<p>An artistic display device of the chemiluminescent type has a shell (20, 22) with a substantially flat outer wall (20) through which an optical image is to be transmitted, a body of liquid-absorbing material (28) forming essentially a flat layer supported in parallel relation to the outer wall, and a set of frangible vials (46) which contain respectively separate liquids and which may be broken so as to mix the liquids to provide a chemiluminescent light-generating mixture that will then saturate the body (28) of liquid-absorbing material. A compartment (40) formed within the shell is in communication with the flat layer (28) of liquid-absorbing material but is of smaller lateral extent, and is adapted to receive the frangible vials (46). Ducts (38) that extend radially outwardly from the compartment (40) provide fluid access for the mixed liquid to flow from the compartment (40) to the periphery of the flat layer of liquid-absorbing material (28). Portions of the rear wall (22) also support the body (28) of liquid-absorbing material at locations intermediate to the ducts (38). This arrangement localizes the set of frangible vials (46) so that they may be more reliably broken, while also protecting the mechanical integrity of the body of liquid-absorbing material (28) after the vials have been broken. Extended flange (36, 37) of rear wall (22) provides attachments for supporting the device.</p> |
