Gasification of solid material

A gasification apparatus (1) comprises a gas circuit including a pump (9) for pumping a gas stream around the circuit; a cyclone device (3) for forming a cyclone in the gas stream; a burner (4) for heating the cyclone device; a device (2) for feeding solid material into the gas stream so that such material is pyrolysed in cyclone device (3) and the amount of gas in the gas circuit; is increased and an outlet (11) for drawing off gas from the gas circuit. The cyclone preferably comprises two stages, one located within the other. Sand may be added to the gas flow entering the cyclone in order to act as an abrasive to keep the cyclone clean. The solid feed material is preferably organic waste material the cyclone is preferably heated using an annular burner (4) which heats the outside walls (i.e. indirect heating). A method to gasify solid material using this apparatus is also claimed.
