PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technically easy method for producing an orthocarbonate without requiring a filtration process for separating a salt generated when reacting trichloroacetonitrile with an alkali metal salt or an alkaline earth metal salt of alcohol. SOLUTION: This method comprises reacting trichloroacetonitrile with the alkali metal salt or the alkaline earth metal salt of alcohol, adding water and an oxidizing agent thereto, carrying out extraction of a liquid phase and treating the extract by distillation.
