An inlay (10) includes a number of spacers (14) projecting to the outer sides of the cast component. The inlay is made from sheet metal, the spacers being formed in it. They project away from the inlay towards opposite outer sides (16, 18) of the cast component. The spacers project from the central section (12) of the inlay. The central section is equidistant from and parallel to the outer sides. Alternatively it is closer to one outer side than the other. The spacers project in alternation to each side of the inlay. The inlay itself projects relative to the cast metal, having an exposed region. Spacers comprise blind depressions formed into the inlay, or penetrations are produced in addition, during their formation. The component is produced as a die casting, by pressure-injection of a molten casting metal (20) into a mold containing the inlay. The spacers define the position of the inlay in the mold, allowing molten metal to flow over both sides of it. An independent claim is included for the corresponding method.
