A method of making a heater structure comprises providing a porous reinforcement material 20 such as glass cloth, applying a metal 30 to the porous reinforcement material such as by spraying and subsequently applying resin 40 to the porous reinforcement material with metal already applied thereto to make the structure substantially rigid. The metal is absorbed into the porous reinforcement material a distance of at least 25 žm or at least 50 žm. Applying the metal to the porous reinforcement material before applying the resin enhanced shear strength between the porous reinforcement material and the applied metal layer, allows the metal temperature during application to exceed that which the resin could stand and enhance the ability to manipulate the porous reinforcement material with metal applied thereto prior to applying the resin. The heater structure may be used in many applications e.g. aircraft wing/air intake/rotor blade heating, vehicle seat/wing mirror heating and railway carriage/track/points heating.
|
