A method for inputting a short text messages in a portable phone is provided to input a common use phrase of high frequency only with once or twice of keypad operations, thereby activating text communication by shortening the operation and input time of a keypad up to 80 percent. A portable phone enters a short text message input mode. A user inputs the first character of a sentence to be inputted by the operation of a keypad(101). The portable phone extracts a common use phrase of high frequency corresponding to an inputted character group from a common use phrase DB(Database) and displays the common use phrase of high frequency on a display window as a common use phrase window(102). The portable phone determines whether phonemes are additionally inputted by the additional operation of the keypad(103). If a phoneme is selected in the input state, an input logic is closed by the input of the operation of an input setting button by the user, and the input logic returns to the start if there is the additional input of phonemes by the user.
