PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction material excellent in high temperature characteristics. SOLUTION: This friction material 2 contains a reinforcing fiber, filler, rubber composition and binder resin. The rubber composition is provided by dispersing carbon nanofibers having 0.5 to 500 nm mean diameter uniformly in a matrix of an ethylene-propylene rubber, showing 1,000 to 3,000μsec first spin-spin relaxation time (T2n) in a non-cross-linked material measured by a Hahn echo method by using a pulse method NMR at 150°C and having <0.2 component fraction (fnn) of a component having a second spin-spin relaxation time (T2nn).
