Data traffic throughput across lub and lur interfaces inside an UTRAN is increased in both downlink and uplink directions by a method of transmission encompassing the following steps executed by an SRNC interfaced to a Node B directly (dual steps are executed for uplink):
- receive IP datagrams, incoming e.g. from browsing the WEB, segment each one into RLC PDUs, and buffer every RLC PDU for retransmission;
- link together in an unique block N RLC PDUs and lossless compress the unique block by a selected commercial compression algorithm, e.g. WinRAR;
- segment the compressed unique block into M segments and add a 2-byte fictitious header to each segment, possibly with in-band signalling;
- multiplex the compressed members into a set of MAC blocks (MACd and MAChs on HS-DSCH channels for HSDPA best effort service),
- map the set of MAC blocks onto the transport structure of the Frame Protocol;
- map the set of FP transport blocks onto dedicated channels DCH used for transmitting the compressed members to the NodeB, which performs opposite operations to restore the MAC blocks transmitted to the UE at the Uu radio interface. The RNC ciphers each compressed member before transmitting on the lub. The NodeB deciphers each one before being decompressed, and re-ciphers each RLC PDU obtained from decompression and segmentation ( fig.8 ).
