The portable cooling box has bearing pins which engage through the wall of the cooling box into recesses in the lid and are displaceable axially against an elastic force which results from the deformation of the carrying handle. The pins are cylindrical in shape and have a conical free end which cooperates with a sloping surface on the lid when the latter is pressed into the closed position, so that the pins are pressed outwards against the elastic action of the carrying handle, which is undergoing deformation. In the closed position the pins are pressed by the carrying handle into recesses in the lid. These recesses are cylindrical, so that the lid cannot be opened without pulling out the pins. The pins are pulled out by means of ramps which are arranged on the exterior of the cooling box and with which the carrying handle cooperates within a limited pivoting region, such that the ends of the carrying handle, and thus the pins which are connected to the carrying handle, are pressed outwards.
