The casing wall (23) traversed by the impeller shaft is of frustoconical design. The discharge-side impeller blade flank's (27) leading edge (28), which sweeps this casing wall with little play (24), extends spirally from the impeller blade tip (35) as far as a point (31) at which it ends in the hub (21); this exposes, between the blade discharge edge tip (35) and this point (31), a relatively large casing wall (23) area which is situated between the discharge-side and the suction-side blade flank and whose width b decreases inwards.
