Process for the hydrogenation of coal

In a process for the hydrogenation of coal, using a reactor system through which coal and hydrogen are passed in counter current, it is proposed to divide the reactor system into a plurality of reaction zones, each reaction zone having its own hydrogen feed and its own product vapour take-off. This prevents fully reacted higher-boiling product vapours passing from a downstream reaction zone into the upstream zone and contributing there to a reduction in the reaction volume.
