Device for feeding raw material into aluminium electrolysis baths

In order to simplify design and improve the dissolving conditions of alumina in an electrolyte, the heated cover plate of the electrolysis bath is provided with a storage hopper and a 0.5-1.5 mm wide metering slit underneath the hopper. The device has a unit for altering the width of the slit (10) and the quantity of alumina discharged. The unit takes the form of a wedge mounted on the inner inclined surface of the storage hopper so as to be capable of being displaced and fixed on it. The cover plate comprises feed and non-feed sections which are arranged around the perimeters of the anodes and are removable should it be necessary to open up the bath. The total length of the feed slit of the device depends on the strength of the current applied to the electrolysis baths. The feed sections can be additionally heated by a layer of alumina. The plates are supported on the cathode jacket and suspended on anode frame or anode lining structures and can also be mounted from above on the anodes of electrolysis baths with calcined anodes.
