PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new metal sulfonate having an ability to reduce friction, a friction reducer comprising the metal sulfonate, and various lubricating oil compositions containing it. SOLUTION: This friction reducer comprises a metal sulfonate which consists of a metal and an organosulfonate group containing a hydrocarbon group comprising a linear hydrocarbon group or an aromatic group having at least one linear hydrocarbon group bound thereto and of which the linearity of the alkyl group in the linear hydrocarbon group, as determined by the carbon nuclear magnetic resonance measurement (<13> C-NMR measurement), is at least 20%. The lubricating oil composition is obtained by blending a lube base oil with the friction reducer in an amount, in terms of metal, of 1-10,000 ppm based on the total weight. |
