PROCESS FOR PREPARING 4,4`-BISPHENOL SKELETON-CONTAIN EPOXY RESINS

PURPOSE: To produce an epoxy resin containing 4,4'-biphenyl skeleton and a small amount of hydrolyzable halogen and useful as the epoxy resin especially in electric and electronic fields. CONSTITUTION: A phenol mixture containing 20-80wt.% 4,4'-biphenyl is made to react with epihalohydrin to produce an epoxy resin containing 4,4'-biphenyl skeleton. 5-200wt.% glycolic monoether is used as a solvent and the reaction is carried out in the presence of >=6% water based on the total reaction mixture at least in an early stage of the reaction (before a stage of adding 0.2 mole alkali metal hydroxide based on 1 mole phenolic hydroxyl group). The amount of the alkali hydroxide used is 0.8-2.0 mole based on the 1 mole phenolic hydroxyl group in the raw material.
