PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester causing little staining of a treating tank and pipings in the water-treatment of polyester chips and attaining excellent transparency, heat-resistance, mechanical properties and aroma-retention and decreased residual disagreeable taste and smell in the production of a molded article from the polyester chips. SOLUTION: The objective polyester is obtained by the water-treatment of polyester chips after polycondensation reaction. The acid component of the polyester is mainly an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, the content of glycol originated from polyester is <=30 ppm, the content of free aromatic dicarboxylic acid monoglycol ester is <=50 ppm, the content of free aromatic dicarboxylic acid diglycol ester is <=70 ppm and the content of free dimer composed of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and glycol is <=200 ppm.
