PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To purify a solution of a specific halogenated quaternary ammonium salt by contacting the solution with a strongly acidic cation exchange resin, thereby removing metallic impurities to an extremely low concentrations. SOLUTION: A solution of a halogenated quaternary ammonium salt of formula (R1 to R4 are each a 1-22C alkyl, an alkenyl, benzyl, a hydroxyalkyl or phenyl; X is a halogen) is purified by bri-nging the solution into contact with a strongly acidic cation exchange resin. Examples of the halogenated quaternary ammonium salt are tetramethylammonium chloride, tetraethylammonium chloride and tetrapropylammonium chloride. The solvent used in the halogenated quaternary ammonium salt solution is e.g. water, methanol, ethanol, (iso)propanol and acetonitrile and the ion exchange resin is preferably a (high-)porous type or a macroporous type resin.
