<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing puffs each having a small particle diameter and an excellent texture in excellent productivity, and to provide an extruder for producing the puffs. <P>SOLUTION: This method for producing puffs is characterized by comprising a pellet-forming process for feeding a puff raw material containing a starchy raw material and water into an extruder 10, heating and kneading the fed starchy raw material to pregelatinize, extruding the kneaded product from the extrusion nozzles 51 of a nozzle portion 50 attached to the tip of the extruder 10, and simultaneously cutting the extruded products to form the pellets having an average particle diameter of 1.5 to 2.2 mm, and a swelling process for heating and swelling the pellets to obtain the puffs having an average particle diameter of 1.8 to 2.8 mm. The inner diameter of each extrusion nozzle 51 is preferably 1.0 to 1.5 mm, and the total number of the extrusion nozzles 51 is preferably set to be 1.5 to 4.5 nozzles / cm<SP>2</SP>per unit cross-sectional area of a barrel 20. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
