<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a novel sulfonic group-containing aromatic compound useful as a raw material of various functional high-molecular compounds used for fuel cells, brine electrolysis, ion exchange membranes, or the like, and to provide a method for producing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The sulfonic group-containing aromatic compound is represented by formula (I) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>is a linear or branched alkylene group which may contain an ether bond; R<SP>2</SP>is a linear or branched alkyl group; A is hydroxy group or a halogen atom; B is a single bond, an alkylene group, carbonyl group, O, S or a sulfone group; M is H or an alkali metal; (n) is an integer of 1 or 2; and the positions and numbers of groups represented by R<SP>1</SP>-SO<SB>3</SB>M and R<SP>2</SP>on the two aromatic rings may be the same or different).
