A scintillator composition for detection of radiation is provided to obtain a desired crystal dimension, short decay time, high stopping power and energy decomposition capability through a cost efficient manufacturing process. A scintillator composition comprises: (a) a matrix material containing (i) at least one element selected from the group consisting of alkaline earth metals and lead, and (ii) at least one lanthanide halide; and (b) an activator for the matrix material, which comprises cerium, praseodymium, or a combination thereof, or any reaction product thereof. The activator is present in an amount of about 0.1 mol% based on the total mol number of the activator and matrix material.
