The piston and crankshaft mechanism for pumps has a connecting rod whose small end (13a) is supported in the piston (17) by the usual gudgeon pin and also by a spring-loaded plunger (27) which urges the small end in the direction of the crankshaft. The plunger has a curved surface seated against a cylindrical surface of the small end. The spring (26) is carried in the crown of the piston. The plunger relieves the load on the gudgeon pin at the end of the stroke to improve access of oil to the pin.
