A device for unlocking a telephone, in which a release button (61) of a locking mechanism that securely locks a handset (41) to a receiving plate, is also used as a member for operating a mute switch (71). The release button (61) provided in the handset (41) is operated to move a release link member (63) against compression coil springs (64, 65), whereby a retractable locking pawl (51) provided in the receiving plate (42) is pushed to release the locked condition. By operating the release button (61), furthermore, the mute switch (71) can be operated to connect or disconnect the microphone.
