To avoid the laborious individual adhesive attachment of a plurality of layers of foil by corresponding adhesives onto the metal plate of unembossed signs and to permit automatic application to the plate in one go, a plurality of individual layers are applied together to the plate (2) as a composite foil (1), the composite foil having the following composition, in the order from the plate (2) upwards: a) a first durable adhesive layer (3), b) a coloured foil (4), c) a permanently flexible adhesive layer (5), d) a tear-resistant foil (6) of metal or plastic, e) a second durable adhesive layer (7) and f) a coloured or reflective foil (8). The composite foil may be supplied in rolls and be laminated by machine onto the plate (2) of signs, which are then embossed by half-cut, the composite foil (1) being cut through to such an extent that the upper layers (5-8) of the composite foil (1) on the raised symbols of the sign can be peeled off. <IMAGE>
