A process and an apparatus (10) for purifying water containing pathogens wherein a halogen selected from the group consisting of bromine or iodine is added to the water to be purified in a first treatment compartment in a quantity sufficient to purify the water and wherein the halogen is removed from the treated water, and wherein the water containing the halogen is brought into contact with polypyrrolidone (15) in a second treatment compartment for a period of time which is sufficient to form a complex of halogen an polypyrrolidone.
