Method for heating a plasticizing cylinder (1) for processing plastics uses radiated heated from burners (8) around the cylinder and convected heat produced by circulating the exhaust gases axially round the cylinder. An Independent claim is included for apparatus for heating a plasticizing cylinder for processing plastics, comprising: (a) an inner tube (3) which surrounds the plasticizing cylinder, with an annular gap (4) between the two; (b) an outer tube (5) which surrounds the inner tube, with an annular gap (6) between; and (c) annular burners for heating a section of the inner tube. The outer annular gap is sealed at one end and is connected to the inner gap at the opposite end, which is fitted with an exhaust gas outlet (7).
