A multi-purpose on-line or field-portable system and method for monitoring the presence and concentration of selected antigen-antibody reactions singly or in combination that result from the presence of specific microorganisms or free antigens present or suspended in aqueous solutions during a given time period. The heart of the on-line or portable system is shown in the figure. An antigen-antibody reaction mixture is added through a port (34) to a detection system, which comprises a J-shaped (38) detection column (32), two sensors (40 and 42), and a heating coil (15) for enhancing the reaction rate. Each sensor (40 and 42) consists of an electromagnetic radiation source and an appropriate detector for the electromagnetic radiation. The reacted antigenic analyte tends to accumulate at the sensor (40) located in the curve of the J-shaped (38) detection column (32). The lower sensor (40) continually nulls against the upper sensor (42) to subtract any optical effects due to non-reactants in the aqueous process or environmental stream. The response from the detector sensors drive an electric circuit, which provides an output signal. |
