PURPOSE:To enhance the strength and toughness by dispersing specified platy alumina particles in a matrix phase of an alumina polycrystal. CONSTITUTION:A polycrystalline alumina sintered compact having <=5mum grain size and <=5% porosity is subjected to hot isostatic pressing at 1,400-1,500 deg.C under >=500atm pressure for 10min to 4hr to obtain the objective high toughness alumina ceramics contg. 30-80vol.% platy alumina having 30-200mum diameter and 5-20mum thickness dispersed in a matrix phase of an alumina polycrystal having <=10mum average particle diameter. |
