PURPOSE:To provide a bidirectional optical amplifier capable of amplifying both up and down signal light rays of one piece of an optical circulator. CONSTITUTION:This bidirectional optical amplifier has the optical circulator 1 which has first, second, third and fourth ports and in which the incident light on the first port is emitted from the second port, the incident light on the second port from the third port, the incident light on the third port from the fourth port and the incident light on the fourth port from the first port, respectively. Further, the optical amplifier has a reflection type up amplifier section 4 having an optical amplifier fiber 2 for amplifying the up light which is made incident on the first port and is emitted from the second port and a reflector 3 for reflecting the amplified up light and returning the light to the second port and a reflection type down amplifier section 7 having an optical amplifier fiber 5 for amplifying the down light which is made incident on the third port of the optical circulator 1 and is emitted from the fourth port and a reflector 6 for reflecting the amplified down light and returning the light to the fourth port. |
